Conover-Phelps Bike Trail extending by two miles this summer

With help from Knowles-Nelson, Vilas County celebrates expansion of Great Headwaters Trail system.

Morgan Johnson of WJFW News reports that the final leg of a popular bike trail in the Northwoods will be finished by this summer, thanks to grants from Knowles-Nelson and the hard work of the Great Headwaters Trail Foundation.

Once completed, the trail will connect its namesake communities of Conover and Phelps in Vilas County. Avid biker and Great Headwaters Trail member Rollie Alger is excited about the opportunities the finished trail will bring.

“We’re hoping that it’s going to have a significant economic impact in that it is going to bring bikers as well as hikers into the area,” said Alger.

Knowles-Nelson grants have brought more than $6.5 million of investment to Vilas County parks and trails, including two grants totaling nearly $300,000 to build the Great Headwaters Trail system. The hard work of donors and partners to raise matching funds for these grants shows how much Northwoods communities value investment in outdoor recreation.
