Wisconsin Natural Resources Board approves purchase of 93 acres for 967K

The Natural Resources Board (NRB) has approved two land acquisitions by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), securing public access to natural areas.

Outdoor News reports on the approval of two land acquisitions in different parts of the state that will be open to the public for nature-based recreation.

In southern Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will add 55 acres to the Kettle Moraine State Forest – Southern Unit to protect a section of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. This $645,000 purchase, funded by the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, secures a trail segment that was previously accessible only through a non-binding handshake agreement for over 30 years. Located just 30 miles from downtown Milwaukee, this parcel will provide a safer route for hikers while protecting an important link in the Ice Age Trail.

“This is truly a beautiful parcel that features moraines and kettles unique to the glacial topography found within the Kettle Moraine State Forest,” said DNR Real Estate Manager Jim Lemke.

The Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program has provided funding for nearly 100 land acquisitions along the Ice Age Trail, facilitated by both the DNR and the Ice Age Trail Alliance.

In northern Wisconsin, the board also approved the DNR’s purchase of 37.7 acres from Douglas County for the Brule River State Forest. The cost of $322,000 will come from federal Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funds, which are used to protect sensitive areas. This property includes Lake Superior frontage and will be open for various outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, and hiking.

Both purchases were praised for protecting natural beauty and providing outdoor recreation opportunities.
