Many of you have likely seen recent comments from legislative leaders calling into question the future of Knowles-Nelson. They’re claiming that last summer’s Wisconsin Supreme Court decision was a “power grab” by Governor Tony Evers. Senate Majority leader Devin LeMahieu even went so far as to say that the court “pretty much killed the stewardship fund.”
Given the remarkable, positive impact that the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program has had, and continues to have, on local communities across the state, it’s difficult to imagine that our elected officials would simply abandon Wisconsin’s proud legacy of caring for our land, water, wildlife, and outdoor traditions.
As a new legislative session gets underway, we’re calling on lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to put aside past political grievances and work on finding a constructive path forward to keep Knowles-Nelson working for Wisconsin.
The Time is Now: Stand Up for Wisconsin Conservation

✔ Join Us This Wednesday for a Live Policy Update
Reminder: Join us this Wednesday, January 15, at 10:00 AM for a live policy update to map out our path for securing Knowles-Nelson reauthorization in the 2025 state budget. All are welcome–whether you’re new to conservation or a longtime advocate.
RSVP here to receive the Zoom link.
✔ Speak Up at Lobby Day: March 12 at the State Capitol
Turn your support into action at our first-ever Knowles-Nelson Lobby Day. Join conservation supporters from across Wisconsin as we gather at the Capitol with one clear message: renew Knowles-Nelson for Wisconsin.
What Is Lobby Day? We’ll start at the Wisconsin Masonic Center for a morning advocacy program, then head to the Capitol for scheduled meetings with your legislators. Whether you’re a hiker, hunter, or simply value living near protected natural areas, your voice matters in this conversation about Wisconsin’s conservation future.
We’ll handle all the logistics, provide training and materials, and ensure you’re prepared to share your story effectively. Lobby Day participation, including breakfast and lunch, is free. Register now at KnowlesNelson.org/LobbyDay.
✔ Can’t Make It to the Capitol? Send a Postcard
Visit Postcards.KnowlesNelson.org to share why Knowles-Nelson matters to your community. It only takes a minute to create your postcard, and we’ll send copies to your assembly representative, state senator, and the governor. Show your legislators the people behind the places Knowles-Nelson protects.
