The future of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program has been a recurring topic of discussion around the state as it now faces uncertainty following last year’s state Supreme Court decision that altered the Legislature’s oversight role.
Senator Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green) recently completed a series of listening sessions across southwestern Wisconsin. In a summary of the sessions in The Monroe Times, Senator Marklein indicated his personal support for the program’s continuation, though he noted that some of his legislative colleagues have expressed reservations. The senator’s district includes numerous areas that have benefited from Knowles-Nelson investments over the years.
During the listening sessions, constituents voiced their support for the Stewardship Program. Over 100 community members came to share their thoughts at the sessions, which took place in six communities across the 17th Senate District (including Barneveld, Belleville, Belmont, Brodhead, Fennimore, and Prairie du Chien).
This support from constituents comes at a crucial time for the Stewardship Program as policymakers consider its future. The listening sessions suggest that, at least in southwestern Wisconsin, significant grassroots support exists, and residents want to see the program continue its conservation mission.
