Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance (SoWBA), a nonprofit land trust dedicated to conserving Wisconsin’s natural heritage for wildlife and people, is working to acquire and protect 330 acres of historic farmland in the Town of Christiana to establish the Koshkonong Prairie Preserve. This idyllic property has been in the Gunnulson family for nearly two centuries and offers a serene rural landscape within easy driving distance of urban centers like Madison and Milwaukee.
The 348-acre farm stands as a peaceful oasis, featuring rolling hills, scenic vistas, and one of the highest vantage points in the area. It’s a mix of hay fields and partially restored native prairie, providing crucial habitat for wildlife, including declining bird species such as the Bobolink. The Gunnulson family were among the original European settlers in Christiana, and as such, their land offers a glimpse into Wisconsin’s agricultural past and ecological future.
This project received support from both Dane County and the Town of Christiana Board. The current landowner, Mr. David Gunnulson, is offering the property at a significant bargain sale and has committed to contributing towards its future management. On January 9, 2024 the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) approved a $1,491,300 Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program grant, and on June 14, 2024, the Dane County Parks Commission recommended a $912,000 Dane County Conservation Fund grant be awarded to SoWBA, fully funding the project.
SoWBA’s vision for the land includes preserving the area’s rural character, creating visitor amenities for public recreation, protecting and enhancing wildlife habitats, restoring native Wisconsin prairie, and offering educational opportunities while sharing the property’s rich cultural history. Another key objective is to restore large tracts of land to native Wisconsin prairie, enhancing biodiversity and climate resilience.
Once established, the Koshkonong Prairie Preserve promises to be a well-visited site, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational opportunities for the community to enjoy for generations to come.
