Opelt Park: Honoring a Family Legacy While Shaping Neillsville’s Future

Nestled along O’Neill Creek in Neillsville, Wisconsin, a new community space has taken root. O’Neill Creek Trailhead and Opelt Park honors the town’s history while looking ahead.

The park, situated on Neillsville’s north side, honors Carl and Millie Opelt, long-time residents known for their community involvement. Their grandson, Irv Schutte, envisioned the park as a tribute to their legacy. Though Carl and Millie passed away years ago, their family’s positive impact continues to be felt throughout Neillsville.

Opelt Park is a collaboration between the Opelt family and the Neillsville Improvement Corporation, and offers visitors an inclusive playground, adult fitness stations, and access to O’Neill Creek for fishing or kayaking. The newly developed O’Neill Creek Trail provides a safe, off-road walking path. Funded in part by a $50,000 Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program grant, the park shows how honoring the past can shape a community’s future.

Looking ahead, plans are in place to extend the trail, potentially connecting Neillsville with neighboring communities and offering more ways for people to enjoy the outdoors. Meanwhile, Opelt Park is becoming a cherished local landmark that bridges the town’s proud past with its promising tomorrow.
