Money Raised to Purchase Redmann Property

The Town of Gibraltar has raised $1.5 million to protect 118 acres of land without using any tax dollars.

A 118-acre property, located in a popular area of Door County, expands Fish Creek Park from 27 to over 150 acres. The Redmann property, located near Highway 42, will expand hiking opportunities, support trail development and watershed preservation, and contribute to the Bayshore Connectivity Trail project.

The $1.5 million project was funded entirely through grants and donations, with no tax dollars used. This goal was achieved in under a year, well ahead of the project’s original five-year timeline.

Grants totaling $1,326,000 included $249,000 from the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, along with support from the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program, Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration Program, Destination Door County’s Community Investment Fund, and the 1923 Fund (a private foundation in Milwaukee).

“$1.5 million in less than a year from when the electors approved it is pretty fantastic,” Town Administrator Travis Thyssen told the Door County Pulse.

“I think people, once we close [on the land purchase], we open it up to the public, they really need to go back there and see the natural beauty we’ve preserved. I want them to come down there and enjoy it,” added Thyssen.
