Marinette’s plans for Rail to Trail path chugging along

Marinette secures Knowles-Nelson Stewardship grant to transform railroad tracks into recreational trail.

The City of Marinette received a $450,000 Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program grant to construct a new “Rail to Trail” recreational path along former Canadian National railroad tracks, reported the Peshtigo Times.

The planned path will run along Water Street from Marinette Middle School to Ogden Street, with future plans to connect to Menekaunee Harbor and Red Arrow Park. Currently in the design phase with Mead & Hunt, the project will transform an abandoned railway corridor into a community recreational asset.

The Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program has supported numerous rail to trail conversions across Wisconsin, including the Ahnapee State Trail in Door County and the Capital City State Trail in Madison. These former railway corridors provide ideal paths for recreation due to their gentle grades and wide paths.

The city purchased the abandoned railway in 2023 as part of its vision to enhance outdoor recreation opportunities for residents.

“It makes for an enjoyable walk because of its unique nature, zero elevation change, and water scenery,” shared Council Member Ken Keller.

Once completed, the trail will expand recreational opportunities for walkers, runners, and cyclists in the Marinette area.
