In a letter to the editor published in Greater Milwaukee Today, Oconomowoc resident Heidi Hallett draws attention to both a victory and an emerging threat for the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program.
While the Wisconsin Supreme Court recently ruled 6-1 that the Legislature cannot indefinitely block Stewardship Program funding through spending request holds, Hallett draws attention to the Republican-backed threats to not reauthorize the Stewardship Program in the next budget cycle.
Hallett described the current tactics as “meanspirited” and going against Wisconsin’s best interests, putting a program at risk that has served the state well since 1989.
The Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program historically has had broad public support and plays a crucial role in supporting not just conservation, but also tourism, quality of life, and climate resilience across the state.
