Gathering Waters: Wisconsin’s Alliance for Land Trusts applauds Governor Tony Evers’ proposal to reauthorize the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program with robust funding of $100 million annually over the next decade. This investment will give land trusts and partners the support they need to protect the places that make Wisconsin special, to manage and improve those lands, and to build the outdoor recreation infrastructure to make those special places accessible to Wisconsin residents.
“Let’s reauthorize the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program for another decade, and let’s do it with bipartisan support,” said Governor Evers. “Let’s deliver on our promise to our kids and grandkids of a better state—and world—than what we inherited.”
“Governor Evers understands that protecting Wisconsin’s land and water requires all of us working together – nonprofit land trusts, local governments, tribal nations, and state agencies,” said Charles Carlin, Director of Strategic Initiatives at Gathering Waters. “His proposal provides much-needed funding for land trusts and their partners to protect the places that make Wisconsin special. In addition, the governor’s plan provides critical funding to manage protected lands and to make smart investments in the basic infrastructure people need to enjoy Wisconsin’s outdoors, including trails, boat launches, shelters, and more.”
“We look forward to working with lawmakers from both parties to pass a Knowles-Nelson reauthorization that builds on the program’s 35-year track record of success and ensures Wisconsin remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family.”
