Wisconsin’s outdoor recreation industry hit new records in 2024, contributing $11.2 billion to the state’s economy – a 9.4% increase from 2023. Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) reports that growth outpaced the national average of 9%. Wisconsin ranks 20th in the nation for outdoor recreation growth.
This economic boost came from several areas. Multi-use apparel and accessories led with $1.3 billion, while motorcycling and ATVs brought in $1.1 billion. Boating and fishing added $928 million. Wisconsin ranks 4th in the country for outdoor recreation manufacturing jobs, with the sector supporting over 96,000 jobs and making up 3.2% of all jobs in the state.
“We have a really fantastic manufacturing base here in the state,” Wisconsin Tourism Secretary Anne Sayers told WPR. “A lot of different sectors of outdoor recreation contributed to this record breaking number.”
This growth, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic as people discovered new outdoor activities, continues to draw visitors from across the Midwest. WXPR reports people coming from Indianapolis, Kansas City, and Chicago to explore Wisconsin’s outdoor spaces. The state’s extensive trail system is a major attraction, with over 64,000 ATV routes and trails allowing riders to travel from the southern border all the way to Bayfield County. The appeal of these outdoor spaces helped Wisconsin’s tourism industry generate a record $25 billion in economic impact in 2023.
These trends highlight the continued importance of initiatives like the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, which helps protect and expand public access to outdoor spaces. Knowles-Nelson grant funds support everything from public land purchases, to upgrades to trails, boat ramps, and local parks across Wisconsin. These investments ensure our state’s natural places will keep drawing visitors and supporting our growing outdoor economy.
