City of Schofield seeks Urban Green Space Grant for land acquisition

Knowles-Nelson grant would expand Lake Wausau city park.

The City of Schofield in Marathon County has applied for funding from the Urban Green Space subprogram of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program to purchase 2.37 acres of land in Schofield. The funding sought is a 50% matching grant; the City would provide the matching funds if awarded.

The land purchase would expand an existing City park located on Lake Wausau with future plans to add a boat launch. The property has about 1,380 feet of frontage in a bay area that connects to the Wisconsin and Eau Claire Rivers.

Recreational activities offered on the property will include hiking, cross-country skiing, fishing, and trapping. The park also has picnicking facilities. The Wisconsin DNR is determining if hunting will be allowed due to the parcel’s close proximity to residential neighborhoods and a school.
